New training centre at Bispebjerg Hospital with focus on less CO2-demanding solutions

The new education centre at Bispebjerg Hospital will be a modern hub for clinical practice, research and education. With its 2,450 square metres, the centre creates an optimal setting for learning and knowledge sharing with a large auditorium for 200 people, 12 classrooms and a ‘living room’ with room for 100 people.

Sustainability has been in focus throughout the process.  One of the solutions is the reuse of bricks from a dismantled wall at Bispebjerg Cemetery for the building's facade, ensuring that the new centre harmonises beautifully with the hospital's historic buildings.

The project's green profile is supported by innovative material choices such as timber load-bearing structures (CLT), hydraulic lime mortar and Peikko's DELTABEAM® Green Composite Beam - made from 90% recycled steel. Even smaller details contribute to sustainability - from recycled curbs in the outdoor areas to recycled door handles and lock boxes that the hospital caretakers have carefully collected over the years.

The Capital Region of Denmark has developed the project in collaboration with BBP Architects and Dominia as consulting engineers, while Skou Gruppen is responsible for the turnkey contract. The project also includes an underground car park for 48 cars and 41 underground parking spaces.

The location in the southern corner of the hospital grounds, facing Lersøparken, makes the centre easily accessible and creates optimal conditions for the daily exchange between clinic, research and education.

Peikko supplied 177 metres of DELTABEAM® Green for the project, containing 30 beams. The beams are used to support the hollow core slabs, CLT slabs and CLT walls. The interaction of Peikko's composite beam, DELTABEAM® Green, and CLT contributes positively to the project's sustainable profile, as both solutions reduce concrete consumption, which weighs heavily in the LCA calculations.

The joints between CLT and DELTABEAM® Green are solved with simple solutions that are easy to handle on site. The CLT walls are screwed into the concrete around DELTABEAM® Green with angle brackets, while the CLT decks are placed directly on the bottom flange and screwed on the underside.
